What is it with Buffalo and MCL sprains this year? First Tyrod and now - Evander?!
Today Dan Bylsma announce that Tim Murray's big piece from the Tyler Myers blockbuster deal last trade deadline, Evander Kane, will miss the next 4-6 weeks with an MCL sprain. In Saturday's loss to the Devils, Kane was driven into the boards knee on knee by defenseman David Schlemko. Kane immediately fell to the ice and stayed down for several minutes.
The Sabres already seem to be struggling in the goal scoring department and are now forced to replace a heavily relied-on goal scorer with young center, Tim Schaller. Schaller has 2 points in 6 games and is a -7. Kane is a winger, so why call up a struggling center? Offseason acquisition Jason Akeson plays the flank and has 6 points in 7 games (3g, 3a) but, he is also a -7 this season in Rochester. Akeson is 25 years old and wrapped up his junior career with 108 points in 67 games in his final season. He has been a consistent 20 goal scorer in the AHL for 4 seasons tallying 53, 55, 64, and 53 points. He's yet to receive a legitimate NHL opportunity. Why not give the kid a shot?
While the season is young, the Sabres find themselves in 28th place scoring at a pace of 2 goals a game and allowing 3.25 goals per game, with no starting goaltender in sight. Columbus and Anaheim are currently bottoming out the league with their uber talented teams - how long until the Sabres are holding down 30th place again? Will we be looking at the best lottery odds for Auston Matthews? The season is young and the team is still gelling, but who knows? At lease they're much more entertaining!
